USDA Farming & Rural Development Resources

Connecting Central Texas farmers, ranchers, and rural communities with USDA farm loans, conservation programs, rural development grants, and technical assistance.

Texas leads the nation in number of farms and ranches. With over 248,000 farms covering 127 million acres, agriculture is a cornerstone of the Texas economy. Cloud Fronts Group helps Central Texas agricultural producers navigate USDA programs and access federal resources.

USDA Farm Loans

USDA's Farm Service Agency (FSA) offers direct and guaranteed loans to farmers and ranchers who cannot obtain commercial credit. These loans support ownership, operating expenses, and farm improvements.

Farm Ownership Loans

Direct and guaranteed loans to purchase farmland, construct buildings, or make improvements. Up to $600,000 for guaranteed loans. Beginning farmers and socially disadvantaged applicants receive priority.

Farm Operating Loans

Annual financing for crop inputs, livestock, equipment, and operating expenses. Can be structured as direct or guaranteed loans with flexible repayment terms tied to the production cycle.

Microloans

Smaller, simpler loans up to $100,000 for beginning farmers, non-traditional operations, and specialty crop producers. Streamlined application process with fewer paperwork requirements.

Emergency Loans

Assistance for farmers recovering from natural disasters — drought, flood, wildfire, or hurricane. Covers production and physical losses with favorable interest rates.

Conservation Programs

USDA's Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) offers programs to help farmers adopt conservation practices that improve soil health, water quality, and wildlife habitat while maintaining productivity.

Environmental Quality Incentives Program

EQIP provides technical and financial assistance for conservation practices — cover crops, rotational grazing, irrigation efficiency, nutrient management, and erosion control. Contracts run 1–10 years.

Conservation Stewardship Program

CSP rewards farmers for comprehensive conservation efforts across their entire operation. Five-year contracts with payments for maintaining and enhancing existing conservation activities.

Agricultural Conservation Easement Program

ACEP helps landowners protect agricultural land and wetlands through conservation easements. Prevents conversion to non-agricultural uses while keeping land in private ownership.

Regional Conservation Partnership Program

RCPP partners with local organizations to address conservation challenges at a regional scale. Central Texas partnerships may focus on water conservation, grassland preservation, or soil health.

Rural Development Programs

USDA Rural Development provides loans, grants, and technical assistance to improve economic conditions and quality of life in rural communities across Central Texas.

Beginning Farmers & Ranchers

Beginning farmer or rancher? USDA defines a beginning farmer as someone who has operated a farm for 10 years or less. Beginning farmers receive priority on FSA loans, reduced interest rates, and set-aside funding for conservation programs. Cloud Fronts Group can help connect beginning producers with USDA resources, mentoring programs, and training opportunities.

Beginning Farmer Loan Set-Asides

A portion of FSA direct and guaranteed loan funds are reserved for beginning farmers each fiscal year. This includes farm ownership, operating, and microloans.

Farm Service Agency Mentoring

Beginning farmers are paired with experienced producers for guidance on farm management, record keeping, and USDA program navigation.

Conservation Set-Asides

A percentage of EQIP and CSP funding is reserved for beginning farmers and socially disadvantaged applicants, making conservation more accessible to new producers.

Socially Disadvantaged Farmers & Ranchers

Section 2501 funding available. USDA's Outreach and Technical Assistance for Socially Disadvantaged and Veteran Farmers and Ranchers program provides grants to organizations that help historically underserved producers access USDA programs. Cloud Fronts Group can assist with identifying Section 2501 partners and resources.
